Day Seven on the Advent Calendar
and
Spiced Fruit and Nut Winter Porridge
7th December
2011
Window number 7 is a
Wooden Spoon!
It’s already Wednesday in the new week and I feel that time is galloping along now. The weather has finally turned very wintry and frosty mornings are causing havoc with my early morning jaunts across the garden to let my hens out, resulting in a rather ungraceful fall today. The chickens blithely charged past me to their food bowl and our tame robin redbreast hopped on the gate to peer down at me with beady eyes……no help there then. I brushed myself off and made my way back to the warmth of the kitchen; I put the kettle on and luxuriated in the solitude of the early morning. However, when I reached the top of the stairs with a mug of hot tea, I could hear my husband gently snoring as he slumbered, I soon put a stop to that out as I stomped across the floor shouting “tea’s up” in a loud but hearty voice!
And now to some exciting news!

Back to early winter mornings and breakfast; you may notice that the Advent window is a wooden spoon today, (it should have been a spurtle, but I don’t have an image for one!) perfect for stirring porridge, the ultimate breakfast for cold winter morns. I love porridge ~ I love it with just milk or with cream and honey; then I love it my mum’s way with chopped apricots as well as other dried fruits and sometimes with a chopped apple. But, I REALLY love it this way with fruit and nuts, and a wee bit of spice ~ it is a great way to pep up the start of the day.
This is a festive porridge, a creamy concoction loaded with dried cranberries and chopped almonds, as well as good dousing of mixed spice for good measure. I added Manuka honey for that extra healthy kick, but you can use any type of honey that you have available……..I made this with semi-skimmed milk, for waistline purposes, but DO use full fat milk or some cream for a totally sybaritic start to the day…….why not, I do sometimes when I feel my waist is thinner! This would be my porridge of choice for Christmas Morn, a bowl of this would set me up for hours of frenzied paper ripping right up to the Main Event of Christmas Dinner. So, for window number seven, I give you a wooden spoon, a Dorset Cereals Porridge Giveaway and some spiced fruit and nut porridge ~ I’m just too generous aren’t I?!
See you later, have a warm and comforting day,
Karen
Spiced Fruit and Nut Winter Porridge
(Serves 2)
INGREDIENTS:
100g porridge oats
50g dried cranberries, such as Craisins
25g whole almonds, chopped into small pieces
1/4 teaspoon mixed spice
2 tablespoons honey, I used Manuka honey
600ml semi-skimmed milk, or milk of your choice
METHOD:
Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon until thickened.
Serve piping hot with extra cream or full fat milk, and an extra sprinkling of mixed spice over the top of the porridge.
Oh, this looks so yummy and perfect for a chilly morning! each day i have to go out to feed my animals too and its getting frosty and nippy! I dont generally get too creative with my oatmeal, but this looks so good! I need to give it a try!~
Karen, just the breakfast for the cold weather we have. I have a spurtle, although I find a wooden spoon easier when I make porridge! Jude x

Wow your porridge looks incredible! Porridge truly is one of my absolute favourite foods and I frequently don't wait until breakfast to have some (like now). I have looked everywhere for Dorset Cereal's porridge because all the flavours look delicious, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere near me, so I would love, love, love to win this prize. The warming comfort of a steaming bowl of creamy oats, with the added zing from the delicious flavours would just be the perfect thing to get me through a winter of essay deadlines. Spending the day in the library would be a whole lot easier if I knew I could come home to some gingerbread porridge.
Oh, and I already follow your blog and twitter 🙂 Didn't know you had a newsletter though- I am definitely subscribing asap!
