Product Description

Both half-shells are cast in our mellow 40% milk chocolate, with one half-shell studded with crispy puffed rice, cookies and chocolate chunks. The other half-shell with a layer of caramel chocolate over a base of milk chocolate. And inside the dreaminess continues – with praline with cookies, liquid caramel and silky smooth milk chocolate ganache along with solid bunnies and chicks cast in milk and caramel chocolate and more.

The story of our extra thick eggs – When we first started making eggs 12 years ago, we were advised by industry experts to use the least amount of chocolate by making them as thin as possible and to arrange the chocolates around the outside of the egg to make it look as big as possible. We did the opposite and made ridiculously thick shells with all of the chocolates hidden inside for extra Easter excitement.

What we thought – My Review:

There is no doubting the excitement that this egg aroused when it arrived, the packaging was plush and luxuriant looking with a big bow and black ribbon around the hat-box shaped box. The box screamed quality and that is exactly what this egg delivered, on both looks and taste. I have been a little scathing in the past about the excessive packing that Hotel Chocolat sometimes employs, especially for its special seasonal collections; no such worries this time, as instead of an excess of plastic, the box that protected this luscious egg was recyclable (cardboard) and also will make a handy box for my jewellery and knic-knacs! And the contents? This egg weighs in at a hefty half a kilo with an extra thick chocolate egg shell and some lovely little individual chocolates nestled inside. One half of the chocolate egg is studded with rice crispies (puffed rice) and biscuits (cookies) with chunks of chocolate……whilst the other half has a delicious layer of caramel that is covered by milk chocolate….both halves are individually wrapped  in gold foil paper and can be eaten at different times, if you have a fair amount of will-power!

The chocolates that were contained inside the egg ranged from pure indulgence, such as liquid caramel chocolates (my favourites) and silky smooth ganache chocolates, as well as wonderful pralines with little pieces of biscuits (cookies) to kiddie kitsch.  We all LOVED the little solid  bunnies and Easter chicks, the chocolate was rich and smooth and some were made with caramel chocolate, which was totally lush! The mini caramel chocolate eggs were rated very highly by all of us…..we are all caramel lovers, and when combined with chocolate, the flavour combination was wonderful. Overall, we were all impressed with the quality and variety of the chocolates, and the EXTRA thick egg shell was also JUST fabulous, and a real treat we all felt. This is possibly the nicest egg I have ever received, and I am sure it would make a fabulous, if extravagant, Easter gift……it is a rather pricey £26:00 plus standard delivery of £3.95, which aims to get this egg to you within five days of ordering. This makes it an egg for an Egg-ceptional person…….sorry, but ’tis the time of year to make Eggy puns! Overall thoughts: quality and quantity for a high price tag, but made with fair-trade cocoa, so ethically good. Perfect for a special person or special couple.
