All the elements of a great British Ploughman's Lunch on toast! Delicious regional English cheese, Red Leicester or Double Gloucester, with tangy Garners Organic Apple and Onion Chutney and Garners Pickled Onions. This rarebit style cheese on toast is easy to make and makes a delectable comfort snack, lunch or is perfect for a fireside supper.Use any cheese of your choice, I wanted to try other English regional cheeses in this recipe, other than Cheddar.
Ingredients
- 3 to 4 slices of sourdough bread
- a little butter
- 2 tablespoons Garners organic apple and onion chutney
- 2 large Garners Pickled Onions (very finely chopped)
- chopped parsley (to garnish)
- salt and black pepper (to taste)
- Garners organic apple and onion chutney (to serve)
- Garners Pickled Onions (to serve)
- 75g grated Red Leicester or Double Gloucester cheese

Directions
Step 1 | Heat up the grill or the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6 |
Step 2 | Line a grill pan or oven tray with greaseproof paper and lay the slices of sourdough bread on the lined tray. |
Step 3 | Spreads the slices of bread with a little butter and then spoon the 2 tablespoons of Garners Organic Apple and Onion Chutney over the top of the slices, sharing equally. |
Step 4 | Sprinkle over the cheese, making sure it extends to the edges of the bread and then scatter over the chopped pickled onions. |
Step 5 | Place under the grill or in the oven and cook until the cheese has melted and is bubbling. |
Step 6 | Serve immediately with extra Garners Pickled Onions and Garners Organic Apple and Onion Chutney on the side, with parsley scattered over the top. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. |
