Delicious Oaty Offerings for Christmas Day
Well, it’s only four more sleeps until Christmas Day now, and although Christmas this year for me and my family will be a little muted, I will be celebrating in a small and intimate way and these FOUR DELICIOUS oat recipes WILL be on the Christmas Day menu! I am delighted to announce that I have been working with one of my favourite BRITISH brands, Mornflake Oats; oats are an essential everyday ingredient in my household, and from breakfast to tea time, they feature almost daily. Regular readers will know that I have a lovely collection of oaty recipes on Lavender and Lovage, and so when Mornflake approached me to ask to work with them, I accepted with alacrity and I now present Four “Oat Cuisine” Recipes for Christmas Day!
Today’s oat recipes are my festive offering for Christmas Day……from breakfast right through to Christmas Day tea time, I’ve created four fabulously festive oat recipes for taste and health; oats are the original super food and some of the health benefits include: oat lower cholesterol levels; oats antioxidants reduce risk of cardiovascular disease; oats can prevent heart failure; they have significant cardiovascular benefits for postmenopausal women; they enhance immune response to infection; stabilise blood sugar levels and substantially lower Type 2 Diabetes risk.
So, although these festive recipes seem indulgent, they are tasty with a good dose of oats for health and well being! I wanted to develop some recipes for Christmas Day using oats but in a special celebratory way……so we start off with an easy to prepare “Festive overnight cooked oatmeal with spiced poached fruits”, which is cooked in a slow cooker overnight to save time for busy cooks; a seasonal breakfast with a festive twist of spiced poached apples and cranberries, this is perfect when served with extra creamy milk and a pot of tea or cup of fresh coffee.
And then there is my recipe for “Festive Sausage, Cranberry, Sage and Onion Oat Stuffing”, made with oats instead if bread, the perfect accompaniment for any bronzed bird – it has all the elements of a good stuffing with sausage meat, bacon, sage, onions and cranberries for a fruity extra flavour. If you use Mornflake Gluten Free oats and GF sausages, then you have a show stopping GF stuffing that all the family can eat. Baking the stuffing in a loaf tin means you can turn it out and serve it in slices, which looks rather attractive, as well as being perfect for that post-Christmas lunch Turkey and stuffing sandwich too!
I LOVE Christmas Day tea time, it’s usually rather later than the prescribed tea time hour of 3 to 4pm, but it’s the culmination of a wonderful day of feasting, family fun and merriment. First we have a wonderful savoury scone recipe; my recipe for “Cheese and Oat Scones” can be made a few days before to save in time and can be popped into the freezer. These delectable oat and cheese scones are so much better than sandwiches as the savoury element for the Christmas Day tea time table, and are perfect when served with assorted toppings.
And finally, for Christmas Tea Time, I have created a fabulous “Spiced Christmas Fruit Flapjack” recipe, which uses any leftover mincemeat that may be lurking in the back of the fridge…..these spiced oat flapjacks are crumbly and fruity and would be perfect for that special “sweet tea time treat” on Christmas Day. And, if you fancy pushing the boat out, you could add a slug of brandy to the mixture before baking too……after all, it IS Christmas!
The recipes for these Four “Oat Cuisine” Recipes for Christmas Day are over on the Mornflake Mill Kitchen website, I’ll add the links below, and all that remains for me to say is have a VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS and a HEALTHY, WEALTHY and PEACEFUL NEW YEAR! I’ll be back tomorrow with some more kitchen chat and seasonal recipes……have a wonderful day and see you soon, Karen
