Smart Phone Photography
and what
£100 gets you in France for a Day Out!
Towards to end of last year, I was sent a Huawei Ascend Y550 smart phone along with £100, the challenge was to see just how much £100 gets you on a day out! The phone is very sleek, and has lots of apps, as well as fairly good camera, and more importantly for me, it is 4G enabled. I decided to wait to see what I could get with my £100 on my next trip to France, and I managed to get quite a lot, as you will see! My day out in fact was several days out, and as you will see from my images, it all centred around food and drink, of course!
The Ascend Y550 smart phone is a device that comes with a large screen, complete with 4G, as I mentioned before, and all for £100. I already have a smart phone, but it’s always handy to have a spare phone, and my husband was keen to try the Y550 out and eventually he keep it for himself! Supporting Android KitKat® 4.4 OS, you can access Google Services and download your rich entertainment content from Google Play Store, including the latest apps, music, books and movies. It’s also perfect for catch up TV services, such as BBC iPlayer and video on demand services such as YouTube, something that he was really pleased to discover.
First up was some shopping! I decided to invite some friends over for a seafood feast; I spent a fair bit of my budget on buying crabs, prawns, oysters, salmon and assorted shellfish. I’ll list the breakdown of costs later, but for now, why not sit back and enjoy the virtual seafood feast for yourselves? Along with the seafood platters, I served bread, salads, cheese and sundry wines and aperitifs.
Next was a nocturnal trip to a local beauty spot in SW France, Talmont; every Tuesday night during the holiday season, and at Christmas and New Year, Talmont is lit up only by candles. A nocturnal trip to Talmont on one of their candlelight evenings seemed like a fun thing to do, plus we could dine out too, which was an even better idea.
We enjoyed a wonderful meal at L’Auberge du Promontoire, which was lit only by candles outside in the garden dining area…..I had the grilled Dorade, which was served in a creamy dill and pastis sauce, the fish was locally caught and was very fresh.
With a few £’s left, we went to La Tremblade the next day, to one of our favourite restaurants, Le Pilotis, and enjoyed a Café Gourmand with the balance of the £100 budget. A café gourmand is a cup of coffee served with a selection of cakes, biscuits, sweetmeats and other sweet treats. Mine comprised: coffee, a digestif of Armagnac, apple cake, ginger cake, fromage blanc and red fruits compote, meringues with cream, a cream dessert and some watermelon.
The Ascend Y550 comes equipped with a 5MP rear facing main camera– great for capturing snapshots and video for sharing through the power of social media. Additionally, it has a 2MP front facing camera – great if you love to take a selfie or chat to your friends and family through video calling. It’s a really neat little phone at a small price, and my husband is very happy with it.

Lovely article Karen. There used to be an amazing shop in Talmont that sold hand made embroidered/appliqued coats, would you know if it is still there? I would love to get another one (or two).
Karen Burns-Booth says
